Route 66 / Travel Gallery
I am excited to bring to you, highlights of my Route 66 travel photos in the newly renamed Travel / Route 66 gallery! While this collection of photos is different from my signature abandoned / forgotten building photography, many elements tie in when it comes to older things and buildings, nostalgia, patina, use of light and shadow, and composition. The subject matter provides nice similarities, contrast, and variety to this online photography gallery shop. I felt inspired to do this trip for a while now. When I felt burned out and knew I needed a break, I put this plan in motion to do the southwest portion of historic Route 66; known as the mother road.
Oklahoma City was where I first started following the legendary nostalgic highway; though it begins and ends a lot, once you travel it, you start to learn its erratic patterns. The highway has been officially decommissioned and traditional modern navigation isn’t always relevant to Route 66. I truly enjoyed the desolate sections and going through towns, seeing nostalgic cars and trucks, classic neon signs, and yes…abandoned buildings / motels that commanded my attention! Retro metal signs of defunct businesses often had unique character and were very photogenic. There were lots of “oh, I need to turn around” as tires practically screech. It was a solo trip, across the miles in Oklahoma, Texas panhandle, New Mexico, and all through Arizona. I enjoyed supporting local independent business as much as possible, and meeting a few cool people along the way. My favorite place to stay was the iconic Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico. I loved the time period correct fixtures and personal experience that you get staying there.
Four thousand miles and nine days later, I came home with an inspiring experience, and photographs I will always treasure. A packed cooler, clothing, and my Leica, tripod and a few accessories were all I needed to make this journey. I added what I feel are highlights from the trip, as works for sale on this site. Metal prints, canvases, and lustre surface prints are among the offerings in assorted sizes. Soon, I hope to make collections of 4-6 photo suggestions to help clients visualize how certain photos tie together and compliment their decor. Stay tuned for more updates, and thanks for the support. Please share this gallery shop with people you know, as it can’t stay running without the support of art buyers.
