Farm house nude series 1

Soon after discovering this brilliant abandoned farmhouse, I knew what I had to do. It’s not every time I photograph people at abandoned locations, that I know much or anything about it’s history going in. This house belongs to the family of a friend, and it was interesting hearing about who lived there and what people did, etc. Whether I am shooting at an abandoned house or business, I observe different things I see and try to learn more about it, and take in some of the story that these little clues are left to tell us. This beautiful Victorian farm house with acres of land and a fairly distressed barn / workshop cried out for some very elegant and artistic nude photography with a model. As I always say, I love the contrast and balance of beauty between the female body and the distressed location and architecture.  Welcome to farm house nude series 1.

I wanted to build an emotional connection between myself, the model, and the location to create an organic mood while doing this photoshoot. With nude photography, it’s about soul, energy, and connection. Capturing the female form is a special art and requires that level of trust, as well as creating a custom mood harmonizing the location, lighting, and every unique face and body. Each pose and movement was gentle and dynamic…ideal when it does not look like a pose. I chose to use fill light and a neutral density filter at an approximate 3 stop setting, to create that lighting and shadow contrast, and separation from background. As if to create a sentimental connection between the model and this once inhabited home…as if her own grandparents had once lived there and although the life that existed there may be gone, the memories are still alive. And embracing nature at this house was healing for her soul….and my presence wasn’t even seen. All you could hear was the wind and the occasional bird singing.

Casting calls for models

I managed to ruffle a few feathers with the last article about my recent experience with casting for a local model. But most appreciated the article…and in doing so, it brought some like minded models to me that all we needed to do was find each other. It gave me a chance to see what models had to say, about their experience with castings etc. and other issues. This is not designed to be model vs. photographer….we are supposed to see each other as valued members of the team in collaborating. Not resent each other. I feel lucky to have encountered many great models who I work well with and we respect each others’ time. How it should be.

Regarding castings….some models seemed disappointed that they answered a casting call online or through an agency and never heard back. It’s like applying for a job. You don’t hear back unless they are interested. I have cast for nude models to update my fine art nude or boudoir photography portfolio….and really can’t reply to all who answer it. If I have questions for who I feel could be the right model, I will contact them….many times they don’t read my casting clearly about the terms of the shoot or requirements. In which case, why would I waste more of my time responding? If I get a personal email or contact through my site, I do respond to all those. So no, it isn’t rude to not reply to models answering castings.

Hiring local models

I live in East Nashville, a very trendy and artistic, tightly knit community, that’s very sought after in recent years. What makes this area so great is the loyalty and enthusiasm for it’s small and local businesses, and it’s the least corporate / chain oriented part of Nashville. Very artist and diversity friendly. So, that said, it’s very important to me to support small local business. There’s a certain accountability that goes with it. You know I’m going somewhere with this.

A quick word about this sector of my photography business. I have a bit of a different style than local boudoir studios. Most of them don’t do nude photography, and their work has a softer feel to it. So, the clients I do get like the fact that I’m different. However, many are career women and do this for their spouses or significant others, whether overseas serving in the military, or working the grind locally. So much of what I shoot for clients I cannot use, some are ok with bodyscapes without their face showing….but there comes a time when I have to be able to use everything that completes and body and soul of a woman… a few times a year, I collaborate with nude / art models. Whether I trade shoot with them and provide them photos and we work on concepts together….or I hire one and that’s her compensation. For the right model with the right body of work, it pays to do that sometimes. And it helps them. If they give me a great shoot, I still may even provide some photos from the shoot on top of monetary compensation.

Boudoir photography Nashville

Usually not a problem. I don’t photograph models frequently especially during peak wedding season, which I am about to wrap up for the season….and I can take advantage of boudoir and artistic nude photoshoot bookings, as well as portfolio updating in that genre. I still do know my fair share of models, though not super active in local online communities dedicated to that. Sometimes I need a new face to shoot for versatility. So, I find a great abandoned house that could be razed soon. I contact several local models, both newer and experienced about hiring or trading for this shoot location. Which is 45 minutes away, but wah. If that’s what it takes to get the shot, I do it. I think I contacted 8….all of which were Model Mayhem or Facebook friends or knew me from being around, or in one of their communities even if I don’t post daily. No cold calls. Here’s where it gets interesting, or pathetic.

3 or 4 of them read my message and didn’t even bother responding. Is my money not good? And can I not offer them something more than the newer shooters they frequent? This is not to sound egotistical or butthurt…I just fail to understand how so many don’t understand they must treat this like a business….you just don’t ignore customers, especially if that customer is well established. The other half was either wishy-washy and couldn’t follow up and commit to it….or got weird about the location, tried to sneak their boyfriend / escort into the mix, whatever else that resulted in a fail. If I didn’t need a new face for this project, it would have been easier…future projects I can use a model I have an established relationship with. I got tired of dealing with the bullshit, so I hired a traveling model from L.A. who would bring it and not flake out or be wishy-washy…..that’s what she’s paid for. I have had fantastic luck with most traveling models in the past. I like supporting locals, but why bother if it’s like this? Do this to people, they tell others in the circle they know. Not hard to figure out.

I forgot about one who wanted to charge going nude rate for “implied nudes” with restrictions and me signing an agreement not to show photos that showed more….and bring her boyfriend escort. I laughed my ass off pretty hard. That was a resounding no. One thing about me, I will bring energy to a shoot and give it all I have….I have been in this long enough to know how I need to do things. I don’t mean to sound egotistical if I don’t want to budge on an escort condition or paying for what’s not usable. In the 11 years I have been photographing the nude woman, I’ve paid models tens of thousands of dollars….several years ago I did a lot of commissioned work and online usage licensing, so I worked with the same models frequently. These days I work with private clients and work with models periodically. If I have to use traveling models to avoid the air headed crap I have experienced lately, or complete disregard for me as a professional photographer, I will continue to hire them, seamless deal. I hope that changes at some point.

Nashville boudoir photography

Once I get blown off or deal with stupid shit from someone, I don’t approach them again….if they reach out to me in the future I am always open to considering them. It’s only fair. This isn’t a popularity contest for me. I’m happy if I love the photos and we both have a good fun experience. That is what it’s about isn’t it? No reason to complicate it.

Abandoned farmhouse in Kentucky

Sorry for the absence lately, I’ve been in high gear shooting weddings and getting albums together for clients…..but soon the boudoir and nude photoshoot time will start, and this one particular location I plan on doing just that, with. 🙂 I went to Southern Kentucky, about 45 minutes from where I live in Nashville to visit a friend….we went exploring a little, showing him my Fuji mirrorless camera system he expressed interest in. So he showed me the abandoned farmhouse where his grandparents and uncle lived. It just got too eaten up with termites and roof / foundation problems they had to move out of it. But it’s got such rich character and history, I took it all in when we arrived and thought of what happened there in days gone by. People working the fields, keeping up the house, working in the workshop, etc. In simple times with no internet and cell phones, just country living. So, then I began to vision how I wanted others to see this wonderful architecture masterpiece as seen through my eyes. So it began.

This was an old workshop behind the house, and I managed to get the inside of it, as light barely peeked through. farm house

Now for the farm house! I plan on doing a fine art nude photoshoot and perhaps some conceptual long exposure photos there with a model so I can update my work. Therefore showing more diversity to private clients who want nude or boudoir photography done 🙂 Stay tuned.

Seeking shelter from the rain

i promise I will get back to posting nude and boudoir photography soon….with the heat, that has been quiet but I’m in the thick of wedding photography season. Several shoots in the works for the Fall. I was out today on the motorcycle, and unexpectedly was caught in an afternoon shower. I was in an industrial, almost ghost town area of Nashville…There isn’t much but some industrial stuff and through traffic through there, maybe that’s why I like it, and even photographed some buildings in that area, LOL.

I decided to get under the roof of an abandoned gas station pump area, seeking shelter from the rain. It was roped off. There was a guy standing under the roof and he lifted the rope for me to get in. I said thanks, and cooled my heels for a bit until the rain passed. He was on foot, which I wondered about, there are no bus stops near there and there is not usually much foot traffic through there. They say don’t talk to strangers, sometimes it’s the only way to learn and keep your mind open. He was in his late 20’s I’d say, first assumption he could have been a drifter, or slightly down on his luck maybe. I finally asked him, what brings you to this unlikely side of town, on foot? He said there was a Mexican Supermercado nearby that had great tacos. He had the bus stop at the stop nearest this little market, and this was how he felt healing and enjoyed his day off from work. I can relate. It’s good to keep your senses open and notice up close what’s around you. That was about it, the rain was fading and we went our separate ways. Now I know a new place to get good tacos 🙂

Daydreaming at the supermarket

I went grocery shopping today, not my favorite thing to do. But I was daydreaming about inspirations for my next mixed boudoir and implied nude photoshoot to feel inspired completing my shopping and making time go by faster. I notice first, many beautiful fit women in the produce section. I had stopped at a road side stand to get tomatoes, peaches, and squash. But still needed more stuff to make salad to last a few days. Days when I don’t have to do much cooking, pre-preparation helps. So far an encouraging experience. The deli, I wanted some lunch meats, I saw a half enthused deli clerk cleaning the scales and a couple waiting there that had ordered what seemed like 47893 things. Normally I probably would come back, or not wait and think of something else, but I was just along for the ride this time. So far so good, picked up some bakery bread, and granola….off to the meat section.

That’s where aisle traffic bottlenecked because people taking up the whole aisle or leaving their carts there….or let’s not forget the people who do so while taking an hour to select a product and go on. I was like, yea, this is one reason I don’t like the grocery store. Going at night can be a trick too, as aisles are blocked by stockers. But we live through it. It went downhill when I went through the frozen aisle to find some sherbet or gelato. First I see a mom and her young daughter who she let yap on her cell phone in the store and had no concept of others not wanting to hear it, or being able to talk and pay attention to where she is walking. No urgency in her stride. Then I saw this morbidly obese woman, probably younger than I am, who could barely move….her daughter, maybe 10 years old was not far behind and their cart was loaded with generic soft drinks and toaster streudels, etc. I had seen enough, and just did not have the energy to stay in that aisle and fight my way through the mob of oblivious shoppers.

I decided to grab some greek yogurt and slice up the berries I bought in produce, then head to the checkout. I was trying to decide which line to get in. One older lady with cat litter on the bottom rack of the cart, and groceries in the rest….I thought possible cat lady with a slew of coupons and I could be there forever. I got behind this young to middle aged couple who moved with a purpose and I could tell by their body language that they wanted to get through it too. As their groceries moved down the conveyor belt, it would have been nice if the cashier was cognizant enough to slide me the divider that I couldn’t reach….I wasn’t about to tritely reach over those peoples’ groceries to get it. Wait it out. I was relieved to be back outside and await my friends who were coming over for a Summer cookout. A day in the life of the neurotic artist, LOL.

First studio shoot with Fuji XT-1

It was my first studio shoot with Fuji XT-1…..Well, not exactly, but similar conditions, LOL. I was in Atlanta shooting with my long time muse and these were inside a small apartment. I simply used the walls as the backdrop and threw 2 color gels at it and placed them feathered against the walls….moved her a few feet closer to me, since there wasn’t much room. Then used a medium softbox feathered from the left, and this way there was some shadow and highlight contrast in the lighting. I used the Fuji XT-1 and the 56 1.2 and couldn’t be happier with the magnificent results!

Angela did the styling herself with baby oil and LOTS of gold glitter! It was everywhere, LOL! Good thing for plastic drop cloths! I love how creative and colorful our collaborative work together always is! The Fuji handled the job well, just had to disable auto exposure preview since there was studio lights in use. Focusing was no issue. It’s not like there was any shortage of contrast for the camera to hunt for in this case. It’s about using your knowledge of photography, creativity, having a great subject, and making any surroundings work as your studio or outdoor location.

Public ignorance about nude photography

As some know, I have another website showcasing my wedding photography and headshots, Jay Farrell Photography. With that said, I attended a wedding networking event last week at a beautiful new venue. The group’s president saw a post on my personal Facebook page, where I announced I had a client coming from 700 miles away to do an artistic nude shoot with me. Of course leaving her location and identity anonymous, I was excited she found my work worth traveling for 🙂 When she was speaking at the event, she came up to me with the mic and announced I was a big time nude photographer. This is NOT something I am, or ever will be ashamed of. I was doing nude photography before weddings, I keep those bodies of work separated because of possible shock value for more conservative clients who want business headshots or weddings photographed. PLUS, one body of work doesn’t water down the other. Separation is good.

Her intentions were good, making that announcement….I looked around and could tell that it livened up the mood, and I saw some surprised looks. I could tell a couple were a little freaked out. Maybe that’s a good thing. Some in that group know I do this work as well. No problems there, I’m not ashamed. Some who did not know, I hope it sparks enough curiousity for them to check out this site. Some may label me as a pornographer without ever looking at my nude and boudoir photography. I know it’s not anything I can control and nothing to worry about….but I’ve seen first hand over the years, the overall public ignorance about nude photography, and even boudoir photography. I’ve lost girlfriends because they couldn’t deal with my involvement in any kind of intimate photography involving female subjects, no matter how well done. I’ve seen models’ families or significant others shame them for their work and even try to blackmail them into giving it up. Let’s not forget catty girlfriends of female boudoir or nude clients asking them why would you do those slutty photos, even if for your man? You’re getting naked or half naked in front of a random photographer who may sell those photos or use them as his personal collection. Usually they laugh at them for how ridiculous they sound. My first thought is, anyone who thinks that is fucking stupid and lives a sheltered life. LOL.

It takes courage and confidence to do any kind of intimate photoshoot. Others spewing their ignorance doesn’t help the grossly misjudged genre of photography and art as a whole. Nude art has been around for centuries. Sure, there is bad work out there that’s unflattering…that’s why doing a project like this should warrant an experienced and discreet photographer that will capture pleasing angles and lighting, as well as make it a good experience. Sure, in the wrong hands, this type of shoot could go wrong. Logic should prevail that choice in service providers should be a careful one.

Sexy elegant pool photoshoot

This is a continuation of my shoot with Eeva, my nude model doing a sexy elegant pool photoshoot 🙂 Because it’s not in a bedroom setting, they aren’t technically boudoir photos, but they have a similar feel to them. The ones with swimwear are sexy but definitely don’t have the same flashy-ness and posed glamour feel of Sports Illustrated. Not that there’s anything wrong with them, but it’s more contrived and “trying too hard to be sexy” than my native style. I intend my nude and boudoir photos to have a subtle artistic flair to them and natural, as the lover sees, that fly on the wall observation of sex appeal and beauty. Sorry if I can’t explain it well, but some may understand what I’m trying to say, even if a little ambiguous, LOL. We started off with some sexy swimwear and captured the sensuality of night swimming. Innocence lost, but the night sees everything. With Fuji XT-1 and Zeiss Touit 32mm 1.8 . One off camera strobe with parabolic umbrella, and strip softbox rim light off to the side.

Now for the nudes, both mysterious bodyscape style that create a sexy, elegant mystique that many clients love thrown into the mix. The slightest turn of the body or shoulder can make a huge difference in the connected factor of the photograph, and confidence. Which exemplifies sexy. The light, the water on her skin, a Summer night’s dream. The natural feel, the capture of timeless beauty. Forever.

Nothing like a little black and white for contrast and different mood, with the right exposure and tonal range, it is a great feature for most any photoshoot, especially nude photography IMHO. Hope you’ve enjoyed!

Abandoned metal shop

I recently noticed a West Nashville metal shop has closed and soon to follow, a wood mill in front of it, as they’re looking to develop that land for living and retail crap. Pretty buildings and new developments shouldn’t always win the race, I like buildings like this, lol. It may not be standing long, so I took advantage of the opportunity to do a shoot there with a freelance boudoir and nude model I have worked with before and needed portfolio development. I loved how the sun was going down and we caught the nice backlighting peaking from behind the building. For photo nerds, I used my Fujifilm XT-1 with a 56mm 1.2, and an off camera Elinchrom Quadra with 17″ beauty dish.

This particular spot was not populated but was somewhat visible to nearby streets, so we couldn’t safely do full nude, but could push the envelope a little….we weren’t trying to get citations lol. I love distressed locations and seeing the contrast between it, and the lovely models and boudoir clients’ softness and beauty. Plus, it keeps each shoot different than the same old bedroom set some boudoir photographers use. But I have that available too 🙂 Part of the thrill is finding these great locations and using them before they get razed. We even found a bulldozer there, she made it look pretty 🙂
