Unusual faith in humanity

I recently spent a week in Dublin, Ireland and also visited Northern Ireland and England to visit a photography mentor. It was a wonderful getaway, I also got to visit my cousin and aunt whom I had not seen in a couple of years. I did a lot of roaming and street photography, where I cut my teeth. I felt very inspired photographing a different canvas and different people. While out one Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon walking with backpack and camera in tow, I was hungry and was looking for a local pub to eat some lunch. With all the pubs in Dublin, this wouldn’t be hard to find, LOL! It was a beautiful day, maybe 20 degrees celsius, which is about 70 degrees on a fahrenheit scale. Nice gentle breeze and sun peeking in and out, mostly in.

I saw a sidewalk sandwich sign in front of a pub that advertised a toasted ham and cheese sandwich and soup of the day for €5.95 and the value of the Euro was pretty close to the American dollar. The front door was open, letting the fresh air in, so it seemed inviting. I went in. The gal behind the bar greeted me, there was no one else in there except one older man enjoying a pint. I asked her about the lunch special, she said they had mushroom soup. With that sandwich, that sounded nice. I asked her if they accepted debit cards and she said cash only, and told me where there was an ATM at a nearby Tesco express store. I told her I’d be right back. From my experience, that would usually be the end of it until the customer came back. But usually the customer would find somewhere else that accepted cards, or be embarrassed because they had to ask….and the establishment probably wouldn’t expect that patron to return on their word.

Surprisingly enough, I returned 5 minutes later and as soon as I walked in, she greeted me and was bringing my lunch out! She was obviously taking me at face value when I said I’d return, so at that moment I was ecstatic that I went back. But I, however was surprised that she didn’t seem surprised to see me back as I said I would be. It’s inspiring to see people who stand for and expect integrity, that was unusual faith in humanity but a welcome experience 😀 Here are a couple candid photos I shot in the bar.

Backwoods nude series

I apologize for the delay in blog posts, I was in Europe and am now playing catch up. But this Backwoods nude series should make up for my tardiness. This particular freelance model worked with me for portfolio development, and with the direction of a friend who lives in the country knew just the place to do it. The first stop was a long time abandoned shack / cabin that you can’t even see from the road, which required some minor hiking to get to it! This particular model is a joy to work with not only because of her natural and unique beauty, but she also works the other side of the lens! She is very passionate about what goes into artistic nude and boudoir photography, as well as chasing light as any photographer should. So I enjoy her enthusiasm and participation here! These are photographed with a Fuji XT-1 mirrorless body and Fujifilm 23mm 1.4 prime lens.

outdoor nude photography

Part of my plan when doing any fine art / nude photography is bringing the lighting, mood of the subject, and location all together. Though this subject has a radiant smile and vibrant eyes, I decided to go with a more forlorn and moody vibe to fit the location. As if to say, someone clearly has forgotten about this beautiful cabin, and perhaps she identifies with that in a more human and emotional sense. Perhaps not. But the texture and distressed state of the structure is a great contrast to the soft beauty of her body and hair, etc. Any fine art photography there can be plenty left up to the viewer. This next spot was at my friend’s land, it was hazy and muggy, not much sun, but we squeezed out as much as was there. I switched to the 56 mm 1.2 for shallow depth of field and to encourage even the slightest of brush light from the hiding sun.

implied nude

You could classify the above two works as implied nude but by using a graceful organic way to do so. I love how the soft glow of the almost non existent sunlight hits her face, hair, and arms. The unique composition of the bottom image to me emphasizes the thought of that golden first morning light hitting the body from the window, and how it gently kisses the back and butt. Almost reminiscent of morning desire so to speak. It’s nice to have a subject who truly appreciates the visions that go into creative works. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series. outdoor nudes

Moody studio nudes

Once we got back from our location shoot at the mill, we got settled and decided to do a few moody studio nudes, with some shadow play and bodyscapes. Sometimes it’s nice to work in the studio…it’s climate controlled, no bugs,  I can play music, and focus on the simple elegant beauty and grace of the female form. I like on location work because of the open feeling of freedom and textures, etc. But a balance is nice. When in the studio and work on moody shadow play with my female form / nude and boudoir work, I use a lot of rim lighting and grids to keep the pattern of light controlled and narrow. I used a Fuji XT-1 and Fuji 56mm 1.2 (Full frame 85mm equivalent)

I love how the shadows provide contrast and a definition of the body, as well as mystique. Mood. Soul. A blank canvas with moody lighting and defining the female form…simplicity, elegance, beauty, and perfection all into one.

I honestly can’t decide if I like the color or black and white of this particular bodyscape, so I will just post both of them. Please share your thoughts on which one you like better 🙂

Abandoned Mill Part 2

Welcome to the lovely artistic nude series from the abandoned mill part 2! By this point we were just maybe 10-15 minutes from losing all our daylight, so these were all done in a short time frame. I generally don’t drag out my photoshoots, boudoir and other intimate and nude photoshoots are an hour or two tops. It’s better to carefully capture the subject’s best angles, and best motions. While carefully composing the images. So working with these time constraints only inspires and challenges me. Honestly even if we spent another hour there shooting, I don’t think we’d have gained anything. Private clients for boudoir and other intimate work generally appreciate that. Some of the body positioning can be hard work especially if they aren’t used to it. Plus everyone’s time is valuable. So, here is what we got. 🙂

I loved the fluid motion of her body, almost like a ballerina. Months from now, the construction project behind the other side of the fence will be done, and too inhabited to do such a photoshoot out in the open there. Plus the mill will likely be gone soon 🙁 Hopefully can squeeze another shoot in before then. I hope you’ve enjoyed this artistic nude shoot with Chelsea, some studio work to come soon.

Abandoned mill part 1

I recently hosted a traveling model, Chelsea Hannah, who visited Nashville on her photoshoot tour. It was already a long day for her, after doing other nude photoshoots in Nashville, and I had just done an out of State engagement photo session. But we decided to go for it, and so glad we did. So, we ventured out to this abandoned mill along the railroad tracks. The building will likely soon be razed due to urban development by reason it had vacated and relocated. It was less than an hour before dark, so we thought we would get a quick but productive intimate photoshoot in and perhaps later do some artistic nudes with shadowing in the studio. And so it went. All captured with the Fuji XT-1 and lenses of choice were the Fuji 23mm 1.4 and the Fuji 56mm 1.2, traveled light.

I love the perspective of the tall weeds in the foreground. Perspectives and textures I think always ad to tasteful nude photography if carefully done.

Something liberating about outdoor nudes, especially in distressed and endangered locations that we know will soon be gone. They live on through the photos. I loved using the perspectives of the fences, debris, texture of the building, and the fluid movements of the model. I hope you’ve enjoyed these abandoned mill artistic nudes! More to come soon!

Abandoned House in Kentucky

After the last nude photoshoot at the Kentucky farm house, we cruised through the Kentucky backroads with the windows down without a care in the world….then after passing through I recounted in my mind, sweet fucking Jesus, this abandoned house in Kentucky I saw down the road from the farmhouse was pretty sweet! I think we were too ready to eat dinner by the time we considered turning around to photograph this amazing architectural gem! I knew I’d be back in that area soon to visit a friend who lives around there, so I figured I’d give it the attention it deserved instead of after a long shoot when hungry, lol.

I had a couple special friends with me, and we pulled up by a cow field, almost as if the cows looked at us and spotted us as carnivores. It was early evening and the sun was still out, the wind was blowing and you could hear nothing except the wind. That feeling of freedom and simplicity we all need sometimes. There it sat. Here’s a house that was once a home. For whatever reason, it became uninhabited, and has been for years. I bet the neighbors pass by and think, someone needs to knock that eyesore down. The outside world has forsaken it’s character, but we haven’t 🙂

Complete with giant dish from the 80’s, LOL!

Now, to go inside and hope we didn’t fall through the floor! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

We walked through the hallway to what once was the kitchen, and a ceiling board fell as a raccoon ran across it!

It was so cool to see how the curtains were blowing in the breeze, was almost eery, and of course warranted a photo 🙂

There was even an old van in a wooded area beside the house, MINT! I hope you’ve enjoyed these! There may be a model for this location in the future, who knows? All shot with Fuji XT-1 and Fuji 23mm 1.4.

Alternative boudoir and nude

I like to put my personal twist on boudoir photography, unlike any others in the Nashville area. You could call it boudoir fusion, Foudoir / Farrell Boudoir ( See what I did there? ), or maybe just Farrell Gallery friendly. LOL. Amber and I ventured to this abandoned house that had actually caught fire in the upper level some time ago. We wanted to do some mix of implied nude and boudoir, given a more alternative boudoir and nude style. There are no fancy pillows here, but the unique and weathered, distressed setting really provide a compliment to her alternative style. She has beauty but isn’t a flowers and kittens type of gal. Now, it was my job to provide some sexy but elegant photos to compliment her style. These are the non nude ones, which are great because it leaves something to the imagination but it shows confidence, they’re sexy, and have mystique.

What better than to use the textures of the doorways and windows for some photos more on the nude level? But yet still somewhat concealed. It was a fun and adventurous shoot that we both enjoyed and boosted Amber’s confidence with a good photoshoot experience, which is win win! intimate photos Nashville

More creepy long exposures

Yup, more creepy long exposures, deal with it 😛 This particular abandoned house has been in shambles for years, quite frankly I’m surprised they didn’t raze it after squatters inhabited it and it caught fire and did significant damage. But like a fine wine, it’s only gotten more character and texture now, lol. So, what do you do with access to this house, a model who likes creative photography? Head to Goodwill and buy a gown and a doll with missing hands, buy a plain white mask at the party store. Then get camera ready. It was mostly cloudy, about an hour and a half before dark. I got the tripod set up with my Fuji XT-1, Zeiss 12mm 2.8, and variable neutral density filter. Since I was using 25-30 second shutters and there was still ambient light, I needed the ND filter. And here were the results 🙂

The wind was picking up and the clouds were getting dark, we only had a couple more minutes until the threat of rain was imminent. Long exposure photography is made up by a sequence of motions, often holding still and subsequently making rapid motions and then holding still again. So it can take time and patience,

The only Photoshop were a few scratches, custom eraser brush with black fill and layers, and some dodging and burning. And minor color treatment. Pretty cool? 🙂

Working the fields

I couldn’t believe how lush and green the fields were that day at that farm in Kentucky, so I thought we’d show them how city folks define working the fields 🙂 I believe these were alfalfa fields, was perfect height to provide some interesting cover for the model, as well as some interesting foreground to compliment the model’s curves as the sunlight kissed her body. I used some different techniques for these harsh late afternoon lighting conditions. It was interesting to use this perspective and horizon lines along with the flow of her body, hair, and expression. And hope we didn’t run into snakes, lol. The gnats were out in full force. Oh the things we are willing to endure working in disheveled locations 😀

artistic nude nashville

For most of these I used the Elinchrom Quadra with a beauty dish and a variable neutral density filter, so the subject would be lit and have backlighting from the sun, and the background would be darker. Creating that point of contrast. A good way to heighten the mood and drama of nude photography.

This was all natural light, and a neutral density filter at 3 stops, to create some silhouetting and the backlighting would provide a high contrast brush light on her shoulder, back and butt. Strategic placement and angle of the model so the sun follows her curves.

I loved the graceful stretch of the model’s body accompanied by the negative space and vanishing perspective of the fence posts on the left.

Dilapidated barn nude series

Welcome to the Dilapidated barn nude series 1, compliments of model Grace Stone and Franklin KY. I always feel a sense of tranquility there, away from traffic and city noise and parking hassles, etc. Makes for an un-distracted creative experience especially doing artistic nude photography outdoors, or partially outdoors. The sun was peaking in and out, and there were holes in the roof of this barn, and the sun hit the rafters and created an interesting shadow and light pattern, so I went all natural light inside the barn. Light, shadows, and the curves of the female body, all working together in harmony.

I love using different angles and leaning of the body and carefully composing the image to make all elements of the photo tie together. The textures and colors of the location really add depth and contrast to the soft beauty and innocence of her body. The flow of her hair and her soft skin, position of arms and fingers help with added caress in the photos.

This next idea was a very impromptu one, wasn’t sure which way I preferred it so here are 2 different post production renditions of the same image, would love your thoughts on that.

There were rolls of barbed wire fencing behind the barn, another wonderful contrast to go beside her body. I think it goes together like chocolate and peanut butter! I hope you’ve enjoyed, it was nice for both the model and me to feel free and inhibited and just get into creative mode.
