I’m very excited to finally have a great intimate couples shoot to show off! I mostly do female form artistic nudes, or implied nude / boudoir sessions, as both parties of the couple being confident enough to do an intimate shoot are few and far between. These clients were visiting from out of town and came to Nashville to see a concert, so time would be limited for us to coordinate our schedules. I’m so thankful we were able to make it happen because they are so well connected and fun to work with. She has been wanting to do this shoot for a while, it just took him time to get comfortable with the idea. I was just glad they found me, because with my unique style of capturing my subjects, they felt a connection to my work and that helped establish comfort. Once they arrived, we talked for a few moments, and I got an idea of what inspired them, and so it began in the studio! We broke the ice with a silhouette. As an FYI, I made sure the couple was ok with me using these photos before doing so, I always ensure a fun and discreet experience.
It didn’t take them long to get comfortable on their own, so throughout the photoshoot, I followed the lines of the bodies, and began to follow their lead while I work with body position, hand position, dramatic lighting with contrast and shadow play, as well as most interesting composition.
They even braved it for outdoors, even though fairly private setting. The pool water was a tad brisk, they rocked it still! I’m happy to hear that they enjoyed their intimate session so much that they are thinking of doing another one! I also put together an album for them. Photos of that album are coming next article. I was on the motorcycle on several occasions this week, the late Summer air has been unseasonable cool and less humid for the past few days. It’s at least a nice temporary relief from the heat. I was on a street while approaching downtown, which isn’t the nicest. In the past it had been known for prostitution and drug deals, etc. It’s still not squeaky clean. But certain times it can be the road less traveled. Plus areas like that are less affected by gentrification, at least for now….so it’s a possible area that if I explore it, I may find a different abandoned building to do photoshoots at! That’s how I have a nose to sniff out cool locations. It’s a sense I have, when something tells me to keep my eye peeled, or exploring an unknown road with the hopes of finding a different spot to do an intimate or nude photoshoot.
I saw one road that I never noticed before, it went uphill and nothing was in sight. I thought hmmmm…..there could be some cool industrial places up that way, or abandoned houses! I turned in on the motorcycle and noticed a few houses, and a couple other warehouse businesses, etc. Then a dead end. Nothing abandoned or particularly interesting. But I may go back and make a couple contacts in the industrial yards for an open area especially in non business hours, if I can get the green light. But even if I came up empty, I took 5 minuted out of my day to satisfy my curiousity and explore a road not many probably even notice. I’m one exploration closer to the mecca of abandoned buildings, to be continued.
I was with a student photographer in recent days, we were talking about the use of textures and shapes in photography, and how using those 2 things in conjunction with intimate / nude photography are a perfect balance. And how the most photogenic things and locations aren’t pretty. They can make a photogenic person look all the more amazing and create that interesting contrasting element in a photograph. When we parted ways, she wished me a “have a nice day”. I said thank you, although I mean this in a kind way, I don’t wish you a nice day, just hear me out. I have to keep the students guessing, because there is always a hidden meaning 🙂
I told her, go find something inspiring, whether an abandoned building or house, or any other structure with rough and distressed textures. Find something dark and disturbing, bring yourself to that place so you understand it. Feel that connection to that subject, whether human or inanimate. Because, that to me, is a nice day. So, in that regard, have a nice day 🙂 Then you can work on the lovely female form and how to bridge the gap between the soft curves of her body, and the rough features of the location.
Green Acres is the place to be. We continued on to some outdoor locations far back enough from the open road, to do some green acres implied nudes, new term lol. This gal is a true country girl. She is beautiful as the day is long, but also isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, is loyal to people she cares about, and doesn’t tolerate a lot of nonsense. She values her quiet living, a strange car pulling up should have a good reason 🙂 We first headed to a creek while the water was still high after recent rains. How awesome was it that we found a dock?
Next we sought out an open field area, as the sun was setting. Although it was hazy, the sun was peeking through the clouds, just enough to provide some nice backlighting which I happen to love. She is one with nature, a free spirit, and comfortable in her own skin. That is what defines beauty. I love exploring, whether abandoned buildings, in the country, or industrial settings. Picking your location on the fly helps the creative senses and gives me something to work on with the subject, so our inputs on the photoshoot are more equal.
I have known this lovely gal for a couple years and have done a couple photoshoots with her, but this would be her first intimate photoshoot. We did very little planning, and did most everything playing by ear. We started in her home, in the bedroom, and by a window. We did not rely on fancy furnishings. I take the minimalist approach to my fine art and boudoir photography, where it’s about the features of the woman and not the surroundings. Beauty in her facial features and body, every curve and detail kissed with light, as the main attraction. This intimate photoshoot was just that 🙂
The common misconception that you need a 5 star hotel room or fancy parlor room to photograph the female form is a shame to me. It’s great when that, or better yet an abandoned building with lots of texture is available. Sometimes it’s about the soul and body you capture, right where you are. To me, this hones me as a photographer of the female form, if the viewers see them and their beauty, and do not think about the location.
Bringing that confident, sexy and elegant mood to the bedroom. No doubt her and her significant other will enjoy the photos, and the best part, she had a fun and comfortable experience! I hope you’ve enjoyed this casual boudoir series, some outdoor intimates coming next!
I recently spent a week in Dublin, Ireland and also visited Northern Ireland and England to visit a photography mentor. It was a wonderful getaway, I also got to visit my cousin and aunt whom I had not seen in a couple of years. I did a lot of roaming and street photography, where I cut my teeth. I felt very inspired photographing a different canvas and different people. While out one Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon walking with backpack and camera in tow, I was hungry and was looking for a local pub to eat some lunch. With all the pubs in Dublin, this wouldn’t be hard to find, LOL! It was a beautiful day, maybe 20 degrees celsius, which is about 70 degrees on a fahrenheit scale. Nice gentle breeze and sun peeking in and out, mostly in.
I saw a sidewalk sandwich sign in front of a pub that advertised a toasted ham and cheese sandwich and soup of the day for €5.95 and the value of the Euro was pretty close to the American dollar. The front door was open, letting the fresh air in, so it seemed inviting. I went in. The gal behind the bar greeted me, there was no one else in there except one older man enjoying a pint. I asked her about the lunch special, she said they had mushroom soup. With that sandwich, that sounded nice. I asked her if they accepted debit cards and she said cash only, and told me where there was an ATM at a nearby Tesco express store. I told her I’d be right back. From my experience, that would usually be the end of it until the customer came back. But usually the customer would find somewhere else that accepted cards, or be embarrassed because they had to ask….and the establishment probably wouldn’t expect that patron to return on their word.
Surprisingly enough, I returned 5 minutes later and as soon as I walked in, she greeted me and was bringing my lunch out! She was obviously taking me at face value when I said I’d return, so at that moment I was ecstatic that I went back. But I, however was surprised that she didn’t seem surprised to see me back as I said I would be. It’s inspiring to see people who stand for and expect integrity, that was unusual faith in humanity but a welcome experience 😀 Here are a couple candid photos I shot in the bar.
I apologize for the delay in blog posts, I was in Europe and am now playing catch up. But this Backwoods nude series should make up for my tardiness. This particular freelance model worked with me for portfolio development, and with the direction of a friend who lives in the country knew just the place to do it. The first stop was a long time abandoned shack / cabin that you can’t even see from the road, which required some minor hiking to get to it! This particular model is a joy to work with not only because of her natural and unique beauty, but she also works the other side of the lens! She is very passionate about what goes into artistic nude and boudoir photography, as well as chasing light as any photographer should. So I enjoy her enthusiasm and participation here! These are photographed with a Fuji XT-1 mirrorless body and Fujifilm 23mm 1.4 prime lens.
Part of my plan when doing any fine art / nude photography is bringing the lighting, mood of the subject, and location all together. Though this subject has a radiant smile and vibrant eyes, I decided to go with a more forlorn and moody vibe to fit the location. As if to say, someone clearly has forgotten about this beautiful cabin, and perhaps she identifies with that in a more human and emotional sense. Perhaps not. But the texture and distressed state of the structure is a great contrast to the soft beauty of her body and hair, etc. Any fine art photography there can be plenty left up to the viewer. This next spot was at my friend’s land, it was hazy and muggy, not much sun, but we squeezed out as much as was there. I switched to the 56 mm 1.2 for shallow depth of field and to encourage even the slightest of brush light from the hiding sun.
You could classify the above two works as implied nude but by using a graceful organic way to do so. I love how the soft glow of the almost non existent sunlight hits her face, hair, and arms. The unique composition of the bottom image to me emphasizes the thought of that golden first morning light hitting the body from the window, and how it gently kisses the back and butt. Almost reminiscent of morning desire so to speak. It’s nice to have a subject who truly appreciates the visions that go into creative works. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series.
Once we got back from our location shoot at the mill, we got settled and decided to do a few moody studio nudes, with some shadow play and bodyscapes. Sometimes it’s nice to work in the studio…it’s climate controlled, no bugs, I can play music, and focus on the simple elegant beauty and grace of the female form. I like on location work because of the open feeling of freedom and textures, etc. But a balance is nice. When in the studio and work on moody shadow play with my female form / nude and boudoir work, I use a lot of rim lighting and grids to keep the pattern of light controlled and narrow. I used a Fuji XT-1 and Fuji 56mm 1.2 (Full frame 85mm equivalent)
I love how the shadows provide contrast and a definition of the body, as well as mystique. Mood. Soul. A blank canvas with moody lighting and defining the female form…simplicity, elegance, beauty, and perfection all into one.
I honestly can’t decide if I like the color or black and white of this particular bodyscape, so I will just post both of them. Please share your thoughts on which one you like better 🙂
Welcome to the lovely artistic nude series from the abandoned mill part 2! By this point we were just maybe 10-15 minutes from losing all our daylight, so these were all done in a short time frame. I generally don’t drag out my photoshoots, boudoir and other intimate and nude photoshoots are an hour or two tops. It’s better to carefully capture the subject’s best angles, and best motions. While carefully composing the images. So working with these time constraints only inspires and challenges me. Honestly even if we spent another hour there shooting, I don’t think we’d have gained anything. Private clients for boudoir and other intimate work generally appreciate that. Some of the body positioning can be hard work especially if they aren’t used to it. Plus everyone’s time is valuable. So, here is what we got. 🙂
I loved the fluid motion of her body, almost like a ballerina. Months from now, the construction project behind the other side of the fence will be done, and too inhabited to do such a photoshoot out in the open there. Plus the mill will likely be gone soon 🙁 Hopefully can squeeze another shoot in before then. I hope you’ve enjoyed this artistic nude shoot with Chelsea, some studio work to come soon.
I recently hosted a traveling model, Chelsea Hannah, who visited Nashville on her photoshoot tour. It was already a long day for her, after doing other nude photoshoots in Nashville, and I had just done an out of State engagement photo session. But we decided to go for it, and so glad we did. So, we ventured out to this abandoned mill along the railroad tracks. The building will likely soon be razed due to urban development by reason it had vacated and relocated. It was less than an hour before dark, so we thought we would get a quick but productive intimate photoshoot in and perhaps later do some artistic nudes with shadowing in the studio. And so it went. All captured with the Fuji XT-1 and lenses of choice were the Fuji 23mm 1.4 and the Fuji 56mm 1.2, traveled light.
I love the perspective of the tall weeds in the foreground. Perspectives and textures I think always ad to tasteful nude photography if carefully done.
Something liberating about outdoor nudes, especially in distressed and endangered locations that we know will soon be gone. They live on through the photos. I loved using the perspectives of the fences, debris, texture of the building, and the fluid movements of the model. I hope you’ve enjoyed these abandoned mill artistic nudes! More to come soon!
